Liberating Structures Practice

A gathering to play & learn together

All Liberating Structures start with an invitation, and crafting one that opens up meaningful participation is both an art and a science.

In this practice we will explore what makes invitations truly powerful!

We have found that a strong invitation has three layers: the context we’re exploring, the purpose of the Liberating Structure we’re using, and the question itself. Sometimes we just need to be clear about the context, and the LS alone carries the weight; other times, we need to intentionally shape all three layers to get them working in harmony.

Drawing from Christiaan Verwijs’ reflections, we’ll dive into how a well-phrased prompt can transform conversations, spark collective intelligence, and deepen engagement. We’ll look how a specific problem space combined with ambiguity and abstraction can lead to richer group interactions, drawing participants in from multiple levels of experience and thought.

During this hands-on practice, we will be exploring, crafting, and testing invitations across different LS, receiving feedback and contributions from peers. You will walk away with your own mini-toolkit to support you in crafting more intentional and impactful invitations.
